Jane Levine, chief operating officer of Chicago Reader, Inc., is beginning the search for a publisher, who will handle day-to-day operations. When that person is in place and trained, Levine will step back and decide what her role will be at the company. Levine has been in alternative newsweeklies since she started as an intern at the Reader in 1973. "I can't even think what the next step will look like until we have a great publisher in place and I know what their skills are," she says. "Right now there are too many trees in my way to see the forest."
Eric Benjamin, a 20-year alternative newsweekly veteran, becomes associate publisher of Gambit Weekly. The Boston native played a significant role in the growth of the alternative newsweekly industry as board president and founding board member of Alternative Weekly Network, which represents more than 120 alternative newsweeklies nationwide. He comes to Gambit directly from New Mass Media, where he was national sales director.
Jeff Koyen and Alex Zaitchik, American ex-pats in Prague (the Paris of the new millenium) are set to take over editorial management of New York Press this week, the New York Times reports. Koyen, formerly production manager at the Press, will become editor, and Zaitchik, who was running an iconoclastic newspaper, The Prague Pill, will be Koyen's deputy, the Times reports.
Tom Finkel, editor of City Pages (Twin Cities) until mid-2002, returns to his hometown of St. Louis and to New Times as the new editor of Riverfront Times. He replaces Jim Nesbitt. Before taking the position to Minneapolis, Finkel was managing editor of Miami New Times. "I'm thrilled to be able to move back to my hometown and be a part of the Riverfront Times," Finkel says. He starts March 3.
After only a year on the job, Jim Nesbitt steps down as editor of Riverfront Times, the St. Louis Business Journal reports. The business journal also reports other changes in staffing at the New Times paper in St. Louis, including canceling the column "Short Cuts" and making Associate Editor Randall Roberts a staff writer.
