In the Flyer's April 14 issue, Chris Davis tweaked the Main Street Journal, a Memphis-based monthly magazine, for the cover of its April issue. Davis's item reads, in its entirety: "The locally produced Main Street Journal, a magazine devoted to all things conservative, appears to be reaching out to African Americans -- a demo the GOP has traditionally failed to attract. Although the most recent issue has little in the way of Afro-centric content, the cover does feature the image of a black man ... and a truckload of watermelons." The Journal posted a lengthy, literal-minded response on its Web site -- arguing, in part, that its covers were designed to capture "mainstreet America." The Journal also takes a shot at the Flyer, saying that the Memphis community "deserves more than what the Flyer offers: a steady diet of liberal commentary and local insult gossip seasoned with ads for gentlemen’s clubs, phone sex hotlines and casinos."
The first two items in Performance Editor Brendan Kiley's Mar. 30 column reported on a couple of incidents in which local theaters in Seattle were victimized by small-time hoods. Determined to maintain the petty-theft theme but "unable to find any outlaws associated with" the third production he covered that week, Kiley took it upon himself to steal a cookie from the concession table. He determined that the play was "so-so" but "the cookie, full of chocolate chips, was pleasantly moist." There is no doubt that someone at the theater read the review, because, according to today's Stranger blog, Kiley received a bill from the theater this week -- $2.50 for one "moist chocolate chip cookie."
R.J. Smith, senior editor at Los Angeles magazine, tells stories of bickering and battling at the Village Voice in an interview with rockcritics.com. Smith, who was a music critic for the Voice until he left in 1990, calls Robert Christgau "the most helpful and complicated editor I've ever had," someone who was so obsessive that when he received a baggie full of semen from a member of the Swans protesting a bad review, he just told his assistant "to file it under S for Swans. Order had to be maintained." Other edit staffers were not so serene, Smith says, so "every week there was some new line being drawn, one week it was the old city hall lefties versus the fresh radical feminists, the next week it was the folks who thought the performance artist who stuffed yams up her ass was the bomb scuffling with those who had their knickers bunched."
The NY-gossip blog Gawker tweaked the Village Voice this morning for posting a home-page link on villagevoice.com to a six-year old story on "Online Celeb Torture" written by Peter Braunstein, who was charged last year with brutalizing a woman in her Manhattan apartment. The Voice quickly removed the link and posted an editor's note, admitting that the employee responsible for the link "should have known better" and that Gawker's ridicule was well-placed.
Or perhaps "speculates" would be the proper way to describe Savage's remark, which was made at the beginning of a presentation promoting his most recent book, "The Commitment," at the Tattered Cover book store in Denver. Apparently Mr. Savage Love and the editor of Westword went out for a couple of drinks prior to the speech. Unfortunately, Savage's other slanderous allegations cannot be published on this family-friendly Web site. For the 20-second MP3 version, click here.
