Wayne Laugesen has drawn attention for his inflammatory Boulder Weekly columns (and, once, for smashing some windows). Now, the former Weekly editor hopes to draw listeners. According to a feature in Longmont, Colorado's Daily Times-Call, Laugesen "is building a sound studio in his Boulder County home at a cost of $10,000 to $15,000," in the hopes of launching money-making Catholic podcasts. Specifically, Laugesen is planning a talk show on which he'll debate "liberal journalist Pamela White"--the current editor of Boulder Weekly.
The December issue contains a lengthy feature on the Louisville Eccentric Observer and its competitor for advertising dollars, Velocity. Velocity is a weekly arts & entertainment tabloid that was spun off from Gannett's local daily, the Courier-Journal. The paper's editor, Jim Lenehan, is confident his faux-alt will attract young readers: "We did a lot of focus groups that told us that this was what they really wanted to see -- that this was the kind of thing they would pick up week after week." Marc Desilets, the senior classified sales representative at Tucson Weekly, collected his AAN CAN prize and traveled to New York City over the Thanksgiving holiday. Desilets won the three-night trip for two by selling $43,095 in national ads during the summer 2005 AAN CAN contest.

Instead, in his award-winning column for Metro Santa Cruz, he writes of the philosophy behind making sauerkraut, the goals of an organic farmer and other topical subjects. Seattle Weekly reported Monday that the federal government will not intervene in the merger of its parent company, Village Voice Media, and New Times Media, LLC. The Federal Trade Commission posted a routine notice last Wednesday listing the merger among proposed deals that neither the FTC's Bureau of Competition nor the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice would challenge. Thus, the Weekly said, the way is clear "for the two companies to become one as soon as paperwork is complete." The Weekly also quoted an e-mail message to staff from Village Voice Media CEO David Schneiderman, in which he said, "the work on integrating the two companies will accelerate, but we will still be functioning as separate entities until the closing." The Village Voice ran its own story later in the day.
