Witt Leaving Washington City Paper

Richard Byrne named interim editor

Howard Witt, editor of Washington City Paper, will be leaving the paper Nov. 16, Jane Levine, publisher of City Paper parent Chicago Reader Inc., announced in a staff memo Wednesday.

A search for a new editor has begun, and Associate Editor Richard Byrne will serve as interim editor.

Here is the text of the memo, reprinted with Levine’s permission:

To: “All City Paper”:

From: Jane Levine

Subject: City Paper staff

I’m truly sorry to announce that Howard has resigned. He can’t yet talk about his plans, but I’m sure he’ll let people know about them when he can. His last day at City Paper is November 16. Howard has produced a fine paper for the past 18 months and I’m sorry to see him go.

We are beginning a search for a new editor. The search will take as long as it takes to find a good editor. In the meantime, Richard has agreed to serve as interim editor and I’m confident that he will guide our solid editorial department well.

I will be at City Paper on Thursday and Friday this week, November 8 and 9, if you’d like to talk to me about any of this.

Please join me in congratulating Howard and wishing him well.
