The Long Island Press brought home seventeen awards at the Long Island chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists’ 2010 Media Awards dinner. The Press earned honors in virtually every category of the competition.

Among the accolades, staff reporter Kaitlyn Piccoli was honored with the 2010 James Murphy Cub Reporter of the Year Award; senior writer/editor- investigations Christopher Twarowski racked up seven honors; staff reporter Jaclyn Gallucci, news editor Timothy Bolger, arts reporter Dave Gil de Rubio and publisher Jed Morey each received honors. In all, the Press took home nine first-place awards.

The Press also won four Folio Awards at the annual Fair Media Council awards luncheon for New York Metro area news media outlets April 30, including: Science/Health or Environmental News Reporting (Gallucci); Educational Reporting (Twarowski and Bolger); and Taxes Accountability Feature Reporting (Twarowski).

“Messed Up” by Twarowski–an investigation exposing how a dysfunctional county vehicle forfeiture program enables convicted drunken drivers to get back behind the wheel, sometimes with deadly consequences–earned two first-place awards from SPJ and first place News Story at New York Press Association (NYPA)’s 2009 Better Newspaper Contest in March.
