Fefer previously worked at the Weekly from 1995 to 2004: He was a staff writer until he was promoted to arts and culture editor in 2002. He has spent the last two years in New York City, most recently working as an editor for Bloomberg News. His first day will be Oct. 3, Village Voice Media announced in a press release Monday.
In a survey of 90 alt-weeklies, The Media Audit found that 25 papers have collectively added more than two million readers via their Web sites, the company announced in an Aug. 22 press release. "It's not just the big weeklies that have made the gains; a lot of the smaller publications (by readership) have achieved significant gains via the Web," says Bob Jordan, president of International Demographics, Inc. a market research firm which publishes The Media Audit. Only 26 of the 90 alternative weeklies covered in the survey failed to gain at least 10,000 new readers through their sites.
The sale of IE Weekly was announced yesterday; the 21-week-old California publication serves a large market in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. Publisher Jeremy Zachary, editor Stacy Davies and managing editor Rich Kane -- all former employees of OC Weekly -- will continue in their positions. "In today's merger climate it makes sense that we join the Southland Publishing family, allowing us to better serve our advertisers locally, regionally and nationally," Zachary says.
