Maui Time Weekly Offers Unique Take on Podcasts
In an effort to find something else to distract us from the year-round perfect weather and white sandy beaches of Hawai’i — and to better connect with its readers — Maui Time Weekly has begun a series of weekly podcasts aimed at providing insight and explanation into the editorial decisions it makes each week.
“We’ve been wanting to provide a way for us to explain some of our decisions and thought-processes, as well as set up some web-only content to steer traffic to our website,” said Tommy Russo, Maui Time Weekly’s publisher and a participant in the podcasts. “Plus it gives me a chance to find out about the stories without actually having to read them.”
Called “Beyond the Ink,” each episode runs between 15 and 20 minutes, and involves Russo, editor Anthony Pignataro and associate editor Samantha Campos discussing their thinking behind various stories that appear in that week’s Maui Time Weekly issue — from the overdevelopment to why we can’t dance holding our mai tais on clothing optional whale cruises. New episodes appear each Thursday on Maui Time Weekly’s website along with that week’s new issue.
“It’s just the three of us talking,” said Campos, who originally thought of the idea of posting weekly podcasts. “Actually it’s just me talking, with Anthony and Tommy doing a lot of goofing around, grunting and bullying and such. Anyway, there aren’t that many alternative weeklies out there doing podcasts, and those that are mostly concentrate on local music.”
Maui Time Weekly is an 18,000-circulation paper based in Wailuku on the island of Maui. It is Maui’s only locally owned newspaper and Hawai’i’s only independent alt-weekly. Maui Time Weekly has published since 1997 and has been a member of AAN since 2003.
