Several Alt-Weekly Writers Are James Beard Finalists

Alt-Weekly writers are well-represented in the list of finalists for the 2011 James Beard Foundation Awards.

Perennial award-hog Jonathan Gold (L.A. Weekly) is up for the prestigious M.F.K. Fisher Distinguished Writing Award, and his “99 Things to Eat in L.A. Before You Die” is contending in the Food-related Feature category.

Also named as finalists are:

  • Tim Carman, Washington City Paper (Food-related Columns and Commentary)
  • Michael Gebert and Julia Thiel, Chicago Reader (Multimedia Food Feature)
  • Alice Laussade, Dallas Observer (Humor)
  • Hanna Raskin, Dallas Observer (Group Food Blog)
  • Katherine Shilcutt, Houston Press (Multimedia Food Feature)


  • Winners will be announced on May 6 in a ceremony hosted by Ted Allen and Gail Simmons that will not involve timed cooking challenges.
