The gesture by the Richmond, Va., alt-weekly celebrates an idea recently offered by Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors Chairman Kelly E. Miller, who suggests that the county make English its official language. "Unfortunately, we were unable to make the issue 100 percent in English," Style Weekly editor Jason Roop says. "But if Mr. Miller can bear with us, we are evolving. We are trying our best." The paper hit a snag on its path to full English immersion in its always-difficult food section. "It was unavoidable to write about Nate's Taco Truck ... without using the word 'taco,'" Roop says.
Arts and culture editor Brandon Reynolds was part of a 44-person filmmaking team that produced an eight-minute short film, "Decisive Moment," in only 48 hours. The film won audience favorite, first prize, and a number of other awards in Richmond's competition, and will now compete with the other 59 cities for the international title.
The Richmond, Va., alt-weekly took home a total of 10 first-place VPA awards, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports. Writer Brandon Walters and photographer Scott Elmquist each placed first in three categories; Elmquist and art director Jeffrey Bland shared one first place finish; Melissa Scott Sinclair and Scott Bass each grabbed one award for writing; and one went to the entire staff. Another Virginia AAN member, Port Folio Weekly, won two third-place VPA awards. UPDATE: We've been told that in addition to the 10 first-place awards, Style Weekly also won two Best-in-Show VPA awards, which are elected from all first-place winners in a newspaper's division. Photographer Scott Elmquist also recently took home another first-place award, from the Virginia News Photographers Association.
Deveron Timberlake, the food & drink editor for the Richmond alt-weekly, is one of two local judges on an upcoming episode of Throwdown! With Bobby Flay, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports. The Food Network show pits celebrity chef Bobby Flay against a local chef known for a regional speciality. The show arrived this week in Richmond for a ribs cookoff, where Flay challenged -- and lost to -- Buz Grossberg of Buz & Ned's Real Barbecue.
The Richmond, Va., alt-weekly won two Awards of Merit from the Grade 2007 awards, sponsored by the Richmond chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA). Led by Art Director Jeffrey Bland, Style Weekly received kudos for "24 Reasons to Love Richmond" and "Original Tales."
The Richmond, Va., alt-weekly marks the occasion by looking back at a quarter-century of pivotal moments in the city's arts scene. The Landmark Communications paper, which was admitted to AAN in 2005, won first-place for best Cover Design in the 2006 AltWeekly Awards.
