Fefer previously worked at the Weekly from 1995 to 2004: He was a staff writer until he was promoted to arts and culture editor in 2002. He has spent the last two years in New York City, most recently working as an editor for Bloomberg News. His first day will be Oct. 3, Village Voice Media announced in a press release Monday.

Fort Worth Weekly Editor Gayle Reaves, former investigative reporter Dan Malone and journalism professor Craig Flournoy were recently chosen as co-recipients of the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas’ James Madison Award of 2006. The three were honored for their work on the Light of Day project, in which journalism students from several Texas universities filed hundreds of open records requests with local law enforcement agencies on their use of Tasers and other non-lethal measures. The best of the resultant stories were printed in the Weekly. The Madison award was presented Friday at the FOIFT annual convention in Austin.

"It's troubling ... to know that some people actually get upset when a U.S.-born-and-bred Latino isn't fully fluent in Spanish," Gustavo Arellano writes in a Los Angeles Times editorial published Monday. Arellano is a reporter for OC Weekly and the author of the controversial syndicated ¡Ask a Mexican! column. He explains that his parents taught him a rural Mexican dialect, which became "mangled" after he attended a public school where he only spoke English. The criticism of Arellano's Spanish intensified after a June appearance on The Colbert Report, but he swears he doesn't care: "I'm an English-language columnist; it's my job to help Americans understand Mexicans, not to write the next Don Quixote."

The blog LAist yesterday posted an interview with L.A. Weekly Staff Writer Daniel Hernandez, who recently won the 2006 Emerging Journalist award from the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. Before he joined the Weekly in March, Hernandez was a reporter at The Los Angeles Times -- he profiled "¡Ask a Mexican!" columnist Gustavo Arellano back in February -- but he says writing for an alt-weekly is tougher. "At The Times I was just challenging the institutional and cultural barriers of an ultimately very conservative place. That was exhausting, and not very fulfilling," Hernandez says. "At the Weekly, there's all this freedom, and that means you have to be more careful and more thoughtful."
