The national Society for Professional Journalists has named Michael Lacey, Stephen Lemons and Paul Rubin as recipients of the New America Award for a series that ran in Phoenix New Times, “Are Your Papers in Order?”
The series documents incidents of racial profiling and harassment of immigrants by Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. SPJ began handing out the New America Award in 2004 to reward “public service journalism that explores and exposes an issue of importance to immigrant or ethnic communities in the United States.”
