How I Got That Story: Unintended Acceleration in the Toyota Prius

The video from the “How I Got That Story” session with reporter Paul Knight and editor Margaret Downing of the Houston Press is now available. It can also be found in the AAN Resource Library.

Knight and Downing discuss the investigative piece, “Wild Rides,” which first reported cases of unintended acceleration in the Toyota Prius. The story first appeared in the Houston Press in April 2009 — long before the issue rose to national prominence.

In the session, Knight explains how his interest was piqued by a tip his paper received from an owner of a Prius whose car had gotten away from her. He also says that many Prius owners were reluctant to talk with him because of the deep loyalty they had to their cars and that at the time, the Prius was the “it” car to have because of its appeal as an environmentally-friendly vehicle. The session was moderated by AAN Editorial Chair Julia Goldberg of the Santa Fe Reporter.

Knight received first place in the Public Service category (over 50K circulation) of the 2010 AltWeekly Awards for his reporting on this topic.

Additional videos from the 2010 Annual Convention will be available soon.
