The State Bar of Texas will honor three alt-weekly reporters with Texas Gavel Awards for excellence in legal reporting:

Jordan Smith, Austin Chronicle, for “The Science of Injustice”

Jeff Prince, Fort Worth Weekly, for “The Power of Alienation”

Mandy Oaklander, Houston Press, for “Life Without Parole”

The awards will be presented in a ceremony on August 10 in Austin.
