For 25 years NUVO has been committed to providing a truly alternative voice in the city of Indianapolis.
Longtime managing editor of NUVO, Jim Poyser, leaving to become executive director of Earth Charter Indiana.
One self-described "ninja" posed as a NUVO freelancer to get press credentials to the upcoming Gathering of the Juggalos.
NUVO, the 21-year-old independently owned and operated media company in Indianapolis, has purchased statewide environmental magazine, Indiana Living Green.
Gannett's Indianapolis Star will no longer print its free weekly publication, Metromix.
NUVO's Jim Poyser has a side project with longtime friend Michael Jensen, a website -- ApocaDocs.com -- that aims to bring humor to "the horror of environmental collapse." Now the duo have released a free book, Converging Emergencies: 2010-2020. "Global warming and industrial toxins are combining to create a fragile environment, yet in some parts of the world, the status quo still seems OK," a release announcing the book reads, "thus need to educate -- via entertainment -- about our planet-wide predicament." MORE: Poyser tells AAN News that the ApocaDocs are offering their weekly PANIQuiz feature, free of charge, to any AAN member papers who may be interested.
In the old days, when the media reported on problems in the newspaper industry, alternative newspapers weren't included. But alt-weeklies are immune no longer: In 2008, many AAN papers faced some of the same issues afflicting their mainstream brethren in the print media. However, you can still find alt-weeklies that had a pretty good year in 2008. That's just what AAN's editor Jon Whiten did, and he reports on 10 papers that increased revenue in a story published by Editor & Publisher.
As news spread of the literary icon's death, NUVO was busy getting together a package for alt-weeklies to run to celebrate the Indianapolis-born author's life. All three pieces were written by A&E editor David Hoppe, who knew Vonnegut well, and are available via AltWeeklies.com (where editors can also find pricing information):
- "Kurt Vonnegut: The Exit Interview" -- a 2,000-word interview conducted Feb. 2007 (published April 12, 2007)
- "Kurt Vonnegut, 1922-2007" -- a 800-word obituary (published April 12, 2007)
- "Kurt Vonnegut Talks About Our Screwed Up World" -- a 1,400-word interview conducted Sept. 2005 (published Sept. 28, 2005)
